Two Star Spark is a San Francisco-based rock band. Drawing influence from a wide range of genres, from indie rock to folk, punk to garage rock, electronica to disco, the band captures a unique sound and delights crowds with danceable, up-tempo numbers about love, despair, envy, rage, car crashes, and earthquakes. The band has two distinct sets depending on the live situation: a plugged-in, hard rocking set for bars and clubs, and a mellower acoustic set for restaurants and private parties.

History

Two Star Spark formed after the dissolution of iY, a cover band. Charlie, the then bassist and half-time singer for iY, started a side project with iY’s backup drummer, Elliot in order to explore the possibility of writing original music. Because a duo with just bass and drums was not to their liking, Charlie started playing guitar instead of bass. Once the two had established the beginnings of a sound and wrote a few solid songs, they started looking to fill the lineup. After a few trials with guitarists, keyboardists, and bassists, they finally added Phil as a full-time bassist.

In early 2009, the band headed to the studio to work on an album with producer extraordinaire and friend parae (Sing Pretty or Die!). After numerous sessions in both our cozy Harrison Street studio and parae’s classy Turk Street studio, photo shoots with our friend Dan, the final product came through: Fences was born and released into the wild on May 10th, 2009.

The band currently lives in and around San Francisco and plays shows all over the bay area.

Current Members

Guitars and Lead Vocals: Charlie has played bass for a number of musical outfits, including Santa Cruz pop punk band Statutory Dan and San Francisco cover band iY. He only started singing on a few songs with iY, but after finding that to be the role he enjoyed the most, he began singing lead and playing rhythm guitar for Two Star Spark. He comes from a classical and blues piano background during childhood, and is self-taught on the bass and guitar. He considers himself a guitar owner, not a guitar player.

Bass and Backing Vocals: Phil is the most recent addition to the band. He started playing bass as a kid in the Great White North. He then moved back to the Bay Area where he played in a few bands, ever expanding his range of musical influences. He eventually met Charlie and Elliot, and they’re keeping the rockin’ alive since.

Past Members

Drums and Keys: Elliot started playing the piano as a wee lad, but later decided banging on the drums was more to his liking. Now he does both, and blends a little bit of computer wizardry into the mix for good measure. After his membership in several bands of varying virtuosity, he helped push Two Star Spark into the SF music scene with renewed vigor. Elliot was part of Two Star Spark from its inception in late 2007 until leaving in the Autumn of 2009 to relocate to the frozen tundra of Michigan, but not before leaving his mark on Fences with the other guys.

Bass: Cathy was one of the founding members of Two Star Spark, helping to shape the sound for years to come. Unfortunately for the band, but fantastic for Cathy, she ended up leaving to have a baby! Cathy made her mark in numerous live performances and a few demo recordings.
